Gwyneth Lloyd - M.Mus.  L.R.S.M.   S.A.S.T.A.T.   P-G. Certificate in Education
                              - Premier's Arts & Culture Award.    Nederburg Opera Prize
My name is Gwyneth Lloyd and I balance my husband's production of visual art with performing arts productions, particularly in my field of expertise which is singing.  I direct a local opera company which draws it members from two local university music departments and townships. We launch opera recitals, a capella ensembles and full scale productions which invariably include Starways in their annual tours.  The opera company singers assist me with the organisation of shows and we extend our performances throughout the Eastern Cape and have even travelled to The Netherlands.   Our Company is the source of new and exciting Xhosa operas and music dramas which highlight the fascinating history of our province.  I also raise funds from Arts & Culture institutions for supporting arts events at Starways as well as in the local and wider community.  Although I, and a growing numbers of my students, have gained professional experience and tuition in Europe, the UK and USA, I firmly believe that artists also need to contribute to the survival of their own communities and cultures.
My contribution to the education workshops that take place at Starways is to offer group and individual vocal technique based on the tension-free principles of the F.M. Alexander Technique. Over the 23 years since I qualified as an Alexander Technique teacher, my teaching methods have evolved into highly successful procedures for warming up and developing the voice.  The procedures are also being used by those students who have been appointed into school and university posts and the numbers of singers performing with tension-free sound combined with an easy stage presence is escalating as a result of our work.  Through the Alexander Technique I have helped other clients to relieve and reverse the causes of back pain and other tension-related problems as well as performers and musicians who are looking for solutions to teaching and performing blockages.

The resident artists at Starways invariably contribute to all the events taking place.  I make the pizza dough (preferably with stone ground flour).  When the spring rains come, I plants seeds and fruit trees which end up in the food and in jars on the table.  Surpluses end up on the counter at The Rose Theatre.   The client accommodation in our hikers cabins requires my attention and there is always the chance for me to meet our visitors popping into The Rose or walking up the path to the Pottery Studio.
I also have weekly teaching commitments at Rhodes University in Grahamstown and Fort Hare University in Alice, Eastern Cape.

After living abroad for several years, my African roots finally dictated my return to the homeland and I have enthusiastically joined Starways here in the hopes of adding value to it's mission. Working in an open air pottery with the most incredible view is to me a form of active meditation and has enabled me to translate my creativity into substance. I focus on hand building in classical, feminine shapes which I then decorate with geometrical patterns, often inspired by ancient Mexican and African designs. I also make functional objects such as espresso cups, goblets and bowls with the belief that our daily meals are enhanced when served on beautiful things.
My deep interest in the human psyche and the sense of well being I feel in helping others achieve their potential is the basis of my practice of personal coaching and NLP (neuro-linguistic programming).
I offer one to one sessions on a private level and also lend my coaching skills in workshops where appropriate.
I recently assisted Gwyneth in the EastCape Opera Company Directors Workshop where I used an NLP technique called Anchoring with each performer.  This meant creating a personal outline of the character to portray (physical presence, voice, gestures and emotional state). The performer then chose an emblematic physical gesture which was then associated with the emotional state of this character. He could then use this gesture when on stage to 'get into character' and tap into their emotions.

I am proud to be part of the team and thoroughly enjoy preparing and implementing workshops
as well as other events held at Starways.
Anton van der Merwe, Potter & Artist, co-founder of
Starways Arts Centre

Anton started making artifacts at an early age in his father's workshop that had an old gothic window to let the light in. Later the possibility of Craft becoming Art became clear to him.
No formal art tuition until late high school at Pretoria Boys High School 1965-1968. This school had a tradition and very high standards of art tuition. Amongst the teachers at PBHS were prominent South African artists Walter Battiss and Larry Scully. Anton was taught by Clinton Harrop-Allen who went on to become Professor of History of Art UNISA. He was also taught by Patrick Glen. He was given further instruction by his Aunt Liz Gerber and some part-time instruction by teachers at Pretoria Tech College in 1970's. That was the sum total of formal art tuition.
Self instruction is a long and arduous path, but there is a greater possibility of doing original and more relevant work in the Arts.
His favorite artists over the years are: Walter Battiss, Adolf Jentsch, Jean Weltz, all the Impressionists and Vincent Van Gogh.
After a period of a self-imposed apprenticeship, Anton presented at numerous group and one-man shows of his works in major South African cities from 1977 through 2007. He also showed his work in major craft galleries in the United Kingdom and The Netherlands. Most of the wood-fired pottery made at Starways is purchased by visitors to Starways Arts Centre. An increasing volume of work is packed and shipped overseas.
Pottery influences include Esias Bosch, Hyme Rabinowitz, Bernard Leach and Soji Hamada.
